Released: January 11, 2021

One of the national grassroots climate justice organization’s largest hubs pledges full support to Councilor Wu and active involvement in 2021 mayoral campaign.

Boston, MA - Today, the Sunrise Movement’s Boston hub has officially endorsed Boston City Councilor At-Large Michelle Wu in the 2021 mayoral race. After four weeks of careful consideration, the Sunrise Boston endorsement task force interviewed Councilor Wu about her bold policy proposals and vision for Boston’s future. This interview, coupled with feedback from the entire hub and the candidate’s past accomplishments, led the task force to vote unanimously in favor of the endorsement.

“From building coalitions, to making public transit more accessible to Bostonians, to introducing a comprehensive plan for a Boston Green New Deal and Just Recovery, Councilor Wu has proven herself time and time again to be the type of public servant that is needed leading the city at this moment,” declared Graham Albert, a member of Sunrise Boston’s political team and endorsement task force. “We are excited to help make her vision for a more inclusive and sustainable Boston a reality by supporting her historic candidacy in the days, weeks, and months ahead.”

“Sunrise has been leading the way to a just, resilient future, and I’m thrilled to be partnering in building a movement for racial and economic justice,” said Councilor Wu. “From a city Green New Deal, to food access and housing justice, I look forward to continuing our work together to deliver the structural changes that Boston needs.”

This is the latest political endorsement by Sunrise Boston, which backed several candidates at the local and state levels in previous election cycles, including races for the state legislature in 2020 and for municipalities in 2019. Additionally, the hub’s membership has continuously advocated for equity, justice, and environmental action through progressive legislative policy.
